Casey holds his jacket at arm’s length and brushes imaginary lint off it, saying, “I wish I had a different suit.”
“That suit’s fine,” Dan assures him. “I like that suit.”
“Yeah, but you see me in it all the time.”
“It’s all right, Casey. I like that one.”
Casey glances over and smiles. “It is such a good thing you’re not a woman right now.”
Dan pauses in the middle of tying his necktie. “I’m going to pray that that’s the most bizarre thing you say to me today.”
“I’m just sayin’, a woman would be freaking out right about now, ‘you can’t see me,’ aaaaaah!” Casey waves his arms a little in what Dan considers to be a pretty passable impersonation of his ex-wife, Lisa.
Dan gets his point. “No worries about freaking out. Unless you’re planning to do that,” he quips. Casey only laughs in response.
Dan shrugs into his suit jacket, and now that he’s almost done dressing, it’s starting to hit him. The enormity of what they’re about to do. The foreverness of it.
Dana sticks her head in the door. “You guys about ready? They’re on a tight schedule, sorry to say.”
Casey tugs at his shirt cuffs. “I think we’re set. Dan?”
Danny nods in the general direction of Dana and realizes his mouth has gone dry.
But then he looks over at Casey, who’s smiling so sweetly at him he could cry (no, I’m not gonna cry. Then I’d really hear it about being a woman). And he watches as Casey extends his hand, that sweet smile only growing bigger. Dan reaches out and takes Casey’s hand, and together they follow Dana through the door.
It’s astonishing, Dan thinks… here they are, walking hand-in-hand down the aisle of this adorable little church in Toronto, about to take the biggest step of their lives, and it feels absolutely right. It wasn’t even planned, but it’s perfect. He’s nervous, certainly, and he’s somewhat verklempt, but the overwhelming feeling is that this is the best thing he’s ever done… or going to do.
Weirdly, the organist is playing “The Wedding March” (weird because Dan could’ve sworn he’d requested “Afternoon Delight,” but Dana must have nixed that idea once he turned his back) as he and Casey make their way down the aisle. The church is empty, save for the minister, the organist, and of course Dana and Natalie. They’re the only ones here to witness this, but Dan’s fine with that, and they’re standing right up there alongside the minister, both of them beaming. He can hear Dana rambling to the minister that the four of them had come to Toronto to do a story on the Raptors, that she was just going about her business when all of a sudden she found herself in the middle of some crazy spur-of-the-moment wedding between two of her closest friends. Not that she minds, she’s saying, she thinks it’s beautiful. And Dan can hear the excitement and emotion in her voice, and he knows she means every word.
He grips Casey’s hand just a little tighter as they walk, and his mind drifts back to yesterday… the utterly unexpected, improbable sight of Casey getting down on one knee, holding out the ring box, all cute and nervous. “Will you marry me?” he’d asked softly, and then immediately on the heels of that, “Is this a really stupid idea?” And Dan had laughed even as he teared up, because that was such a Casey way to propose. And he loved Casey, 200 neuroses and all.
He smiles now at the memory, and tears up again, though he promises himself one more time that he’s not going to cry. He feels a light tug on his hand, and he glances over at Casey, who’s watching him closely.
“So, are you gonna take my last name?” Casey asks.
“No, and I’ll tell you why—” But he stops short, because he sees the gleam in Casey’s eyes and he realizes he’s being toyed with. It’s just Casey’s way of trying to center him. Dan’s mouth quirks up in response.
They come to a stop in front of the minister and the organist brings “The Wedding March” to an end. The minister opens up the Bible in his hands, clears his throat, and intones, “Dearly beloved…”
And Dan begins to cry.

Date: 2008-12-03 08:08 pm (UTC)Yeah, sure... though I don't think same-sex marriage was legal in Canada back in 2000, but we can pretend. We're in the pretending business.
Thanks very much for reading!

Date: 2008-12-05 06:36 pm (UTC)I think that they decided to do it again when it became legal in Connecticut. This time with a few more people in attendance (though sadly, Dan couldn't get his dad to come, but he did have his mom there, so that was good. Lisa almost didn't let Charlie go, but Dan had a long talk with her and she finally gave in)
(um. Sorry)
I really liked this.
